Leah Remini was a Scientologist for many years but, earlier this month, she confirmed she had severed all the ties with the cult. In a new statement to People magazine, she also seems to be confirming reports that her decision was prompted by Church leader David Miscavige, who had a problem with her questioning his methods.

As we also noted on a previous occasion, Remini’s sister told the press that Leah was abused emotionally and verbally for years for daring to question Miscavige’s relationship with actor Tom Cruise, inarguably the biggest supporter of Scientology.

She also informed that the entire family had defected, not just Leah.

The actress confirms that.

“We stand united, my family and I, and I think that says a lot about who we are, and what we’re about,” she tells People.

She doesn’t go as far as to name Cruise and Miscavige, but many believe she can’t but be talking of them next, when she says she’s entitled to question things and not take them for granted.

“I believe that people should be able to question things. I believe that people should value family, and value friendships, and hold those things sacrosanct,” she says.

“That for me, that’s what I’m about. It wouldn’t matter what it was, simply because no one is going to tell me how I need to think, no one is going to tell me who I can, and cannot, talk to,” Remini adds.

Voices online say that she might be referring as well to the practice known as “disconnect” within Scientology, which forces members to cut ties with members of their family who defect.

When her family decided to leave the cult, she was probably told not to see them again.

“It doesn’t matter, it could be anything. I thought about the family being broken up for some other cause, and I’m not about to shut up,” Remini adds.
