The development team at Riot Games announces that League of Legends, one of the leaders of the Multiplayer Online Battle Arena space, has managed to reach 27 million concurrent active daily players, with up to 7.5 million of them engaged at the same time.

The increase in the player base is impressive given that in October 2012, the reported number stood at just 12 million, according to Gamasutra.

The team at Riot Games has been trying to attract more gamers to its MOBA title, which is entirely free-to-play, but encourages dedicated players to pay for a wide range of cosmetic options and access to some heroes.

The studio has managed to make the community more welcoming and has offered tutorials for all newcomers who are interested in finding out the core mechanics of the genre.

League of Legends is facing tough competition currently from the Valve-made DOTA 2 and Blizzard will also soon launch a similar experience based on the Starcraft universe.
