Riot Games PR manager Chris Heintz tells TUAW that the Mac version of League of Legends – a multiplayer online battle arena game – has entered the Public Beta Environment (PBE) and is nearing its final release. The game should be available as an Open Beta on the live servers “soon,” Heintz says. He explains why the game got delayed, because Riot Games’ rapid patching model wouldn’t fit a game port.
“…and also the performance and stability of that client wasn't up to our players' expectations, and so we killed it,” says Heintz.
The new version is developed internally at Riot and is a native OS X program. “As soon as we closed down the earlier Mac beta, we had always planned from that moment to develop a native Mac client that would actually be able to serve the needs of Mac players. We knew it was going to take some time, but we wanted to do it right,” says Heintz.
We’ll keep you posted with any updates on the progress of the beta as well as the official release.
