Developer Riot Games has introduced a brand new feature game mode for League of Legends players, titled Ascension, and following the theme of unlimited power.

The developer of the most popular multiplayer online battle arena game in the world is known to shake things up once in a while with a temporary feature game mode, with past installments seeing the complete removal of cooldowns and ability costs and other such zany ideas implemented, resulting in a veritable torrent of fun.

Ascension Mode

The new game mode pits two teams of five members each against each other, in a race to defeat Ancient Ascendant Xerath and steal his buff.

Whoever manages to get his boost becomes a real powerhouse, though the developer assures gamers that a concerted attack from the enemy team will be enough to take down even the most resilient of champs.

More specifically, killing Xerath will offer the player a bonus that grants them unlimited mana, greatly reduced cooldowns, as well as bonus health, attack damage, ability power, physical and magical armor, and spell penetration.

The flipside is that in order to make the game still somewhat fair, healing and regen powers are halved on all champions affected by Xerath's gift, and the enemies will always know the position of the one holding the buff.

When the player that currently holds the buff is taken down, Xerath will respawn, and the race will begin anew.

How to win

Securing a victory in the new game mode will be done by being the first team to reach 200 points. Points are given for killing opponents (1), as well as for capturing the relics that are scattered around the map (3), and killing the Ascendant (5).

Players under the effect of the Ascendant buff will gain double points for their kills, making neutralizing the affected enemy a priority, unless they want to fall behind.

The map itself features some interesting elements that add to the novelty of this game mode, with shifting sands making passage difficult, and gamers being forced to rely on teleporting in order to get back into the action after scouring the map for relics.

Playing the map will award gamers new icons, offered to those who win one, three and five games, and an additional special one being bestowed to players who win a match where they denied their opponents possession of the Ascendant buff.
