Developer Riot Games has announced that League of Legends, its free-to-play strategy game built around the DOTA mode, now has more than 32.5 million registered players, with 11.5 million of them playing at least one game each month.

The numbers more than doubled since Riot Games reported the same statistics during July.

More impressive is that 4.2 million gamers are logging into League of Legends each day, with more than 10.5 million hours spent playing the game during each 24 hours period and about 1.3 million of them playing at the same time.

Riot Games is made up of some veteran developers from Blizzard and a number of well known modders who made the jump to full fledged development.

In the coming year League of Legends will face competition from DOTA 2, which Valve is creating, while Blizzard will launch its own take on the genre alongside the second installment in the Starcraft 2 series, Heart of the Swarm.
