A new version of the already popular Layar Reality Browser is now available for download for users of an Android-based device, as well as for those who own an Apple iPhone, namely Layar 5.0.

The new release comes in a final flavor, following a period of beta testing, and brings forth a wide range of enhancements, fixes and new features, the company announced.

The Layar 5.0 mobile browser comes to Android and iPhone with the option to share content with friends and family on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

This feature would offer users the possibility to easily take a screenshot of a layer that impressed them, or of a 3D model, and easily share it to the said networking sites.

“This year we are continuing to look for more ways to bring augmented reality into people’s everyday lives,” said Layar CEO Raimo Van der Klein.

“With today’s new version, we’re able to take a huge step closer towards that goal by giving users the chance to discover exciting new content and share cool layers and augmented screenshots with friends.”

With the new Layar 5.0 browser flavor, users would be able to interact more with layers, due to the fact that the application comes with animation capabilities.

Basically, this app version removes the limitation to static content that was in place for layers before, and brings forth animation, so that icons and 3D models could come to live on the mobile phone.

Moreover, the app comes with UI changes, so that users can easily save their favorite layers, or view the most recently viewed ones in the “Recent” tab.

“Finally, for our Symbian users, don’t worry! We haven’t forgotten about you. In time our Symbian client will be updated to include all of the same features found on the Android and iPhone clients,” the company stated.

The new Layar Reality Browser 5.0 is available for download via the Android Market and through the App Store.
