Encryption and secure file shredding in one chest

Despite the tendency among antivirus software companies to release next year's protection suite a year before (2010 editions of major developers are currently in the making) , Lavasoft preserves the chronological evolution of its applications and keeps up with the current twelvemonth period, releasing 2009 programs this summer.

Lavasoft has issued a new version of its Privacy Toolbox, which features a secure file shredding utility and a data encrypting tool, both working to keep your files (even the deleted ones) out of sight of prying eyes. The two applications integrated in the toolbox can be downloaded and used individually. They are available on Softpedia (Digital Lock for encrypting/decrypting data and File Shredder for secure deletion and free space wiping) as well as from Lavasoft.

Digital shredding of the information in the toolbox helps you prevent its retrieval from the hard disk. 13 algorithms are at your disposal, providing you with multiple passes to ensure the sending of the data to total oblivion. The module sports the most popular methods (Bruce Schneier's, Peter Gutmann's, German standard, NSA, US Department of Defense) as well as less known and almost equally effective ones like US Army AR380-19, Navy Staff Office Publication for RLL or HMG Infosec standard 5.

Not only the live data can be eliminated securely, but also the already deleted information, because the module is capable of sanitizing the free space using the same 13 algorithms it features. Wizards guide you all the way through a successful operation and you can choose which drives of the hard disk(s) should be dealt with.

With Digital Lock encrypting the files becomes as easy as a stroll in the park. This module provides encryption, decryption, self extraction and ‘send secure email attachments’ capabilities. All operations run smoothly and quickly, converting the selected files/folders to .safe (cryptographic container) data.

Creating self-extracting encrypted files allows you to send data in a secure manner to users who do not have Digital Lock installed on their machine. All that the receiver needs to be able to unlock the information is the protecting password of the enciphered file.

The Secure Email option is designed to get email messages delivered without the risk of somebody else, other than the intended recipient, being able to read it. The files are encrypted and you can choose between HTML, SAFE or EXE as wrapping extensions.

The fresh new version of Lavasoft Privacy Toolbox 2009 comes for $39.95/year, with the possibility of trying it for 30 days, at its full capacity. You can get the two modules building the suite separately, for at least $29.95/year each (the 30-day grace period applies in their case, too). So getting the suite will grant you a discount of about $20.
