Following Micromax Canvas 2 Colours’ launch in India, another Indian OEM, Lava, announced its own mid-range smartphone that comes with exchangeable back covers, the Iris 450 COLOUR.

The name of both smartphones makes it look like they should have belonged to the same series of devices. However, the Lava Mobiles handset seems to offer lower specs in comparison with Micromax’s Canvas 2 Colours.

For example, fonearena reports that Lava Iris 450 COLOUR sports a 4.5-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports FWVGA (854 x 480 pixels) resolution, whereas Micromax Canvas 2 Colours boasts a larger 5-inch display with HD (720p) resolution.

Customers interested in purchasing the Lava Iris 450 COLOUR should know that the smartphone is available in Pro black and Ivory white. The handset has been priced at Rs 7,999 ($130 / €95) outright.

As expected, the mid-range smartphone ships with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system out of the box, and is likely to remain stuck on this version until it gets discontinued.

Hardware-wise, Lava Iris 450 COLOUR is decent but it could be better. It comes equipped with a dual-core processor provided by MediaTek, which is clocked at 1.2GHz.

Furthermore, the smartphone packs a Mali 400 graphics processing unit, only 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory. Given the fact that the Lava Iris 450 COLOUR only offers 2.43GB user memory that can be used to install games and apps, users may to want to add more storage via microSD card slot (up to 32GB).

Another feature that has become trivial in Indian smartphones is dual-SIM capability, which is also included in Lava Iris 450 COLOUR.

On the back, the handset sports a 5-megapixel photo snapper with fixed focus, LED flash and video recording, while in the front, there’s a secondary VGA camera for video calls.

It is also worth mentioning that Lava Iris 450 COLOUR offers multiple connectivity options, including 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 and GPS. The smartphone is powered by a 1800 mAh battery, which has yet to be rated by Lava.

“Smartphones today are not just a companion but a reflection of one’s personality. Today’s vibrant youth wants to look colourful and carry things that match their personality.

Iris 450 Colour offers just that with a range of colourful accessories in form of back panels and headphones so that the youth can enjoy an all-new and fresh look of their smartphone that matches their taste,” said Hari Om Rai, chairman and managing director, LAVA International.
