Last week, Microsoft started to deliver a new software update for devices running under the Windows Phone operating system, namely software 7.10.8107.79.

The update is meant to fix a variety of issues that users have been reporting lately with the operating system.

This is a maintenance update for Windows Phone, though it appears that it will not be pushed out to all users that own a device powered by the platform.

“This week we started to make a new Windows Phone update —8107—available to many Windows Phone customers,” Eric Hautala, general manager, Customer Experience Engineering, explains.

“The update, available to all carriers that request it, is part of our ongoing maintenance of Windows Phone.”

The update will be available all around the world, “although not everybody will receive or require” it, Eric Hautala continued. All new updates for Windows Phone will come this way, it seems.

Basically, users will receive new updates depending on the country they live in, the carrier that provides them with wireless services, or the phone model they are using.

According to Microsoft, the update process will remain unchanged compared to what we were accustomed to before. Most probably, this means that major updates will be delivered to all users, though it remains to be seen whether carriers and manufacturers will have something to say on this.

The Redmond-based company is expected to release at least two new flavors of Windows Phone this year, namely Tango and Apollo. The latter will arrive as Windows Phone 8, rumor has it.

While no official confirmation on these OS versions has emerged so far, we do have the changelog for the said 7.10.8107.79 software update that is being pushed to devices now:

On-screen keyboard. Fixes an issue to prevent the keyboard from disappearing during typing.

Email. Fixes a Google mail syncing issue.

Location. Fixes a location access issue. With this fix, the Me feature in the People Hub sends anonymous information about nearby Wi-Fi access points and cell towers to Microsoft only if you agree to allow the Check In function to access and use location information.

Security. Revokes digital certificates from DigiCert Sdn Bhd to address an encryption issue. Email threads. Fixes an email issue related to Microsoft Exchange Server 2003. With this fix, when you reply to or forward a message, the original message is now included in your response. Voicemail. Fixes a voicemail notification display issue that occurs on some European and Asian networks under certain conditions.

More details on the update and how to apply it can be found on Microsoft’s official Windows Phone website.
