This summer, there is not one, but rather several trends in bag design that we can take into account if we're looking to be at the very cutting edge of the latest styles, shapes and textures. There's no unifying trait between the three main bag trends, which is why we'll be talking about the main characteristics of each separate style. One thing to keep in mind is the fact that although I'll be talking purely about trends in designer bags, some of the high end mass producers are already using similar techniques, fabrics and textures, which means that we might be seeing some lower-priced, good quality similar models on the High Street quite soon.

1. Texture and pattern in bag materials. This year is all about playing with colors, and bag designers take this trend one step further. We'll be seeing some novel textures and fabrics too - the

coarse woven linen look is just one such example, same as the crochet materials. We'll also see gem or pearl studdings, richly printed fabrics and dye effects - and we'll be seeing all these textures and details replicated on the fall's must-have shoes. Another tendency is to combine several different textures, such as suede and leather in one solid color, with chunky chains or handles for added impact. Patchwork effects are also an emerging trend.

2. Smaller bags are in. Clutches in particular are making a spectacular comeback and they are yet another feature of the minimalist style that seems to be sweeping

Hollywood and not only. Large tote bags are still in - however, we've pretty much hit saturation point with them and it's wisest to opt for a smaller, more feminine purse that's just big enough for the essentials. Don't be afraid to choose a bright color - red, for instance, midnight blue or green, and stay tuned for more news - we'll be hearing a lot about small bags in the near future.

3. Bags come in all possible colors. No color is off-limits - you could say we're living the eighties madness all over again. We're no longer limited to the traditionally tame black, navy, tan or taupe. Whether it's red, green, blue, whether we're talking tribal or floral patterns, as far as bags are concerned, "choice" is the operative word, and there's enough of that to fulfill even our craziest fancies.
