If you depend on the Pangu 7.1 app to jailbreak your iPhone, stay away from version 0.3

The latest update for Pangu 7.1 untethered jailbreak was released last night in Cydia. However, some of the big names in the Jailbreak community advise the users not to update it.

Version 0.3 is described as one that brings small improvements to the untethered jailbreak. The developers believe they have found a solution for the sandbox issues. The update was released under the Cydia / Telesphoreo repository, which is one of the default, trusted repos on the market. But, as this usually happens, the update may show up in other repos.

The users can see it in the Updates menu, but a few known voices have already sent a message to everyone listening: do not update to version 0.3. Among these were iH8sn0w and Cydia creator, Jay Freeman, aka saurik.

iH8sn0w was the first to explain the issue. He says Pangu Kernel exploit relies on hardware notifications so users with bootlegged displays went through issues because the app was using the light sensor. Pangu developers have switched to the hardware notifications to Gyro or Temperature sensors, but the issues were still present on some of the phones.

It appears the problems caused by Pangu were fixed by removing certain tweaks from the phone. Among these, GestureMusicControls was mentioned. Other users reported that iPhones running on older firmware versions were seeing issues related with Safari and Calculator. The apps were immediately crashing after the update.

Jay Freeman addressed this on Reddit. The creator of Cydia explained he has discussed the problem with someone from Pangu and had asked them to reimplement the installation scripts of the package because those were the ones that were having problems.

Saurik believes that if only one in a thousand users is affected by a bug, then an update in Cydia will cause problems to more people and they will have to go through restoring their phones and will lose data. Another strange problem is that some of the users that were affected by this bug were people who did not restart their iPhones in a really long time.

In the meantime, the Pang Team has confirmed there was an issue and they have asked saurik to take the upgrade out of Cydia. A community manager for Cydia also reported that the version 0.3 was taken out of the unofficial App Store.

The users that have upgraded to the 0.3 version will have to wait until the Pangu team releases a new one. The only other way to reverse to a previous version would be to restore the iPhone and set it as a new one.
