The devices can be attached to the bikes themselves

A new revolutionary laser technology allows bicyclists to carry their own bike lanes with them, with the aid of a new portable device that basically projects the said lane on the street, as the person pedals along idly. The new invention was created specifically with the average bike rider in mind, as the number of road accidents involving bicycles, as well as fatalities, have increased sharply over the last years.

With the help of the new system, the bikes will no longer have to only travel in their own designated lanes – which is due to make them confined to a few properly equipped streets – but will be able to travel at the side of any road, as the projections that the lasers make on the pavement are visible even from tall SUVs. The drivers can then take steps to ensure that the bicyclists don't end up on their cars' hoods.

Another thing the inventor of the device, Altitude Inc., had in mind was to ease the burden that city councils were placed under, when it came to creating biker-friendly infrastructure. It costs a lot of money to implement, and private investors willing to place their money in such projects are very difficult to come by. So, by taking the power back to the people, the company allows them to take their safety into their own hands, and to finally benefit from a warning signal that is very effective.

“Instead of adapting cycling to established bike lanes, the bike lane should adapt to the cyclists. This is the idea behind the LightLane. Our system projects a crisply defined virtual bike lane onto pavement, using a laser, providing the driver with a familiar boundary to avoid. With a wider margin of safety, bikers will regain their confidence to ride at night, making the bike a more viable commuting alternative,” a handout on the company's blog reads.
