It's not a group of mad scientists. Nor is it backed by Al-Qaeda money and troops. It's just Larrabee, your personal AMD/Nvidia killer. Big words coming from a company that no one has heard about. Or maybe you've heard about it and its plans but not under the same name.
Larrabee is ready to knock off two of the most powerful CPU and GPU companies. In case you're thinking that they are insane, guess again. In fact you'll be surprised to realize that the shadow company Larrabee is just lame disguise for INTEL. It seems that Santa Clara has gotten into renaming business. But that's not all.
INTEL is actually hiring all sorts of simulation and GPU design specialists in order to develop what seems to be an integrated GPGPU design under the Larrabee brand. This turn of events might seem strange but with AMD's purchase of ATI, and Nvidia's intolerance regarding the idea of ever being bought, INTEL has been left out of the GPGPU race.
Larrabee is just what INTEL needs at the moment. The company has been pushed out several times these last years on problems such as 64-bit processing and even more on dual core CPUs. And it seems that they're finally back on track with ideas and products enough to last them a lifetime. When asked if Intel planned to follow AMD's trend by adding more graphics to enhance the CPUs, Otellini responded: "The short answer is 'yes.' That's the only answer I'm giving. Next question."
GPGPU is the next fighting territory. It is a known fact that with the help of special software, GPUs can process physics calculation faster than CPUs so the GPGPU architecture is indeed a thing that can change the future. Anyhow, INTEL lacks the experience in producing GPUs that both AMD and Nvidia have and they are desperately trying to bypass that with the help of Larrabee Group. The success of this idea largely depends on the abilities of the people involved in the project. Need a job?
