A gem sold at auction in Geneva has fetched the largest sum per carat than any other diamonds in history.

The orange diamond is smashing all types of records – it is also the biggest of its color ever recorded, according to the Daily Mail.

The fancy gem went for $35.5 (€27) million, which is more than anyone expected it would. The rare, pear-shaped stone has been listed at 14.82 carats.

If you do the math that is $2.4 (€1.8) million per carat, so you could buy a small village or a series of luxury homes for that amount.

A spokesperson for Christie's auction house says that the transaction is unique because the orange gem has been valued “amongst the greatest pinks and blues, which are traditionally the most appreciated colored diamonds.”

They are also setting out to auction off a pink diamond worth almost twice the value of this orange stone.
