A couple of days ago, the company Lockheed Martin announced that, together with Beijing-based lifestyle firm Reignwood Group, it will work on developing the world's largest ocean thermal electric plant.

The 10-megawatt plant will be fueled by differences in ocean temperatures, meaning that the electricity it will produce will be as green as it gets.

“The ocean holds enormous potential for terrawatts of clean, baseload energy,” Dan Heller with Lockheed Martin commented on the importance of this project.

“Capturing this energy through a system like OTEC [i.e. ocean thermal electric plant] means we have the opportunity to produce reliable and sustainable power, supporting global security, a strong economic future and climate protection for future generations,” he added.

As part of the collaboration between the two companies, Martin Lockheed is to take care of project management, design and systems engineering services.

The plant is expected to take 10 months to be designed, and be up and running within 3 and a half years.
