Floyd Landis won the 39.9 km time - trial between Chickamauga and Chattanooga, and took the lead in the Tour of Georgia. This is a great performance by the American cyclist, which confirms his good form this season after winning Paris-Nice and the Tour of California. He was followed on a 4-second margin by fellow American Tom Danielson, Discovery Team cyclist, who clinched victory in Georgia last year.
"It
was very difficult; there were hard climbs in the middle. I kind of paid for it, but got through it. I think I started a bit too hard. I should have gone easier in the climb but didn't have a choice," said the Texan, who enters the mountain stages on Friday with the yellow jersey.
His main contender, Danielson, said that it would be very difficult for his team to squeeze any time away from Landis, since he remembers that last year his team struggled a lot to beat the Texan. "They have a very good team this year. A lot of them are good climbers. We have to conserve as much energy as possible and not get too far ahead of ourselves," warned last year's winner.
CSC cyclist David Zabriskie finished 3rd in an all-American podium. It was the first race since he recovered from last year's Tour de France crash, which kept him away from the competitions for almost a year. "I tried to get into rhythm, and it was ok. I'm not very keen though with the third place," said Zabriskie.
