Following stars like Adam Lambert and Ricky Martin, British rapper Lady Sovereign too has chosen to deal with the media on a very personal aspect of her life without the help of a publicist. Thus, the latest issue of Diva magazine brings her coming out interview, in which she not only explains how she came to this decision but also why she chose to walk down this road alone, as MOG can confirm.

According to the outspoken rapper, who’s made a name for herself both back home in the UK (and Europe) and in the US, in the past, she usually had people – publicists – handle all questions about her private life. There came a point, though, when she was no longer happy with how that worked: and that was the day when she decided she wanted to come out and she wanted to do it on her own terms.

“Magazines would always ask about it but [their questions] would get stopped by my publicists. It was my choice, too, because I was a bit worried about it but now I don’t really give a [expletive]. You can’t hide away forever. It’s just stupid and now I’ve come out I feel a lot more comfortable with myself. But it was a bit scary back then because some people do have horrible opinions,” Sovereign says for Diva, out at newsstands today.

Ricky Martin too said that he could no longer stand being in the closet, stressing that he felt he owed no one but himself an explanation for his choices – certainly not to his critics. In an emotional and honest post on his official website, the Latino singer said that the time had come to make a change and stop living in the shadow by announcing he was gay. Coming out publicly was only the final step of embracing who he was: no regrets and no fear.

“If someone asked me today, ‘Ricky, what are you afraid of?’ I would answer ‘the blood that runs through the streets of countries at war... child slavery, terrorism... the cynicism of some people in positions of power, the misinterpretation of faith.’ But fear of my truth? Not at all! On the contrary, It fills me with strength and courage. This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough,” Ricky Martin said at the end of March this year.
