It’s one of the most controversial music videos to date and it’s not even out yet. The video for “Judas,” the second single off Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” album, will premiere on the family-friendly American Idol, it has emerged.

For the past few weeks, people have been talking about “Judas” incessantly, especially since religious protesters have gone out of their way to say that the video is pure evil, even if they haven’t seen it yet.

With this in mind, and given the words of the song, fans know to expect something truly out of the ordinary from Mother Monster – which probably makes the decision to premiere it on AI all the more surprising.

Yet, it’s happening: mark May 2, 2011 in your calendars, because that’s when the video officially premieres, PopEater reports.

“Interscope Records announced that the video would be released May 2 during the talent show and according to Gaga’s creative director, Laurieann Gibson, it promises to be nothing short of ‘groundbreaking’,” PopEater notes.

Gaga will play Mary Magdalene in the video, while Norman Reedus of “The Boondock Saints” will be Judas.

According to the aforementioned e-zine, the version of the video that will air on American Idol will be a “toned down” one, which could also means that fans should expect the other version to hit soon afterwards, on some other channel (most probably online).

“Gibson told MTV that the video ‘is ultimately a representation of [she and Gaga’s] true bond,’ said that the video is ‘really going to shock the world’,” PopEater writes.

Gibson also comes clean about wanting to drop out of the project when she heard how controversial it would be – and only agreed to remain on board after Gaga promised her they would tone it down together.

In other Gaga news, HBO has just premiered a teaser for the documentary “Lady Gaga Presents The Monster Ball Tour at Madison Square Garden” (see it below), which shows her breaking down in tears and crying over how she still feels like a “loser kid in high school.”
