One of the ongoing jokes online about Lady Gaga’s fashion style is that she simply wakes up in the morning, rolls in glue and then rolls on the floor so that what sticks to her she wears as that day’s outfit. Fashion leaders would beg to differ.

Often hailed as a trendsetter and an artist par excellence, Lady Gaga can add now another notch on her belt, having received the Fashion Icon Award at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards, PopEater reports.

In other words, her wicked and outlandish style has just been recognized by the highest authority in fashion, at the event also known as “the Oscars of fashion.”

“The ‘Born This Way’ singer was named a fashion icon at the Council of Fashion Designers of America Awards Monday night,” PopEater reports.

“Gaga received the Fashion Icon Award for 2011 at the 10th annual event in New York City,” says the e-zine.

The singer was on hand to receive her award and, speaking strictly fashion, she did not disappoint: she wore a black mini dress that ended in a huge, fluffy train, her trademark heel-less shoes and the brightest wigs ever.

Speaking at the event to accept the award, Gaga said fashion had always been an important part of her, even before she was the successful singer she is today.

“Fashion made me feel like a star before I was,” she said, as per the same publication.

Other winners of the night included Proenza Schouler (Womenswear Designer of the Year), Michael Bastian (Menswear Designer of the Year) and Marc Jacobs (Geoffery Beene Lifetime Achievement Award).

Gaga and the nominees and winners were not the only stars at the exclusive event, since celebrities with a passion for fashion also came out to support their favorite designers – and rock some pretty fierce outfits on the red carpet as well.

“It was wasn’t just designers who came out for the big event. Jessica Alba, Kirsten Dunst, Chloe Sevigny, Miranda Kerr, Ashley Greene, and Kanye West all attended the fashionable awards,” PopEater writes.
