And how her father stepped in and saved her

In the past, Lady Gaga credited her drug use with the inspiration for her off-the-wall fashion sense and wacky hairstyles, but she never actually hinted at how serious said habit was or, for that matter, what determined her to kick it. In a recent interview, the controversial singer admits to doing bags and bags of cocaine, alone, in the privacy of her own room – and that she only stopped when her father told her what she stood to lose from it, as MTV UK can confirm.

As per her own words, Gaga was never the kind to do drugs when socializing, like many pop stars reportedly do when they hit the party circuit. Instead, she would retire to her own room and indulge in the habit to the music of The Cure, which she names her drug “soundtrack.” At one point, the star reveals, she hit rock bottom and was so low that her friends became increasingly worried by how much time she spent locked up.

“My cocaine soundtrack was The Cure. I loved all their music, but I listened to this one song [‘Never Enough] on repeat while I did bags and bags of cocaine. [The lyric says] ‘Whatever I do / It’s not enough’. Isn’t that funny? At the time I didn’t think there was anything wrong with me until my friends came over and said, ‘Are you doing this alone?’ Um, yes. Me and my mirror.” Gaga reveals in the aforementioned interview.

However, it wasn’t until her father stepped in and pointed out to her what she was about to lose that she finally realized her actions would have tragic consequences. He did not nag her about seeking help, Gaga says, but rather took her aside and told her she needed help to fight this thing, if she really wanted to have a clear shot at being a successful musician. Surprisingly, she took notice and understood that she could no longer continue that way, so she kicked the drug habit for good.

“My father is a really powerful man, a telecom guy. So he looked at me one day and said, ‘You’re [expletive]-ing up, kid.” And I looked at him and thought, ‘How does he know that I’m high right now?’ And he never said a word about the drugs, not one word. But he said, ‘I just wanna tell you that anyone you meet while you’re like this, and any friend that you make in the future while you are with this thing, you will lose.’ And we never talked about it again.” Gaga explains in a separate interview, quoted by the Daily Mail.
