Because she’s always so vocal about a wide range of issues, it’s easy for some to assume that she’s not serious about all of them. However, when Lady Gaga says she’s committed, she means it, and there’s no way she will stand to have allegations she’s using the gay community to sell records.

Speaking with The Advocate, the singer rubbishes reports that she’s only supporting the LGBT community because it serves her interest and boosts her record sales.

In all fairness, if that’s what Gaga was doing, she would stand to profit a lot from it, since a large chunk of her fanbase is from said community and she keeps addressing them directly with her inspirational music and motivational statements.

Luckily, the thought of profiting from the gay community has not even crossed Gaga’s mind, she tells the magazine: she is simply using her star power to attract attention to their cause.

“To say that I would use the gay community to sell records is probably one of the most ridiculous statements anyone can make about me,” the singer says, with frustration in her voice.

“I would say the top thing I think about every single day of my life, other than my fans, loving the music, and my family being healthy, is social justice and equality,” Gaga adds.

Similar rumors have placed her in an imaginary competition and feud with other icons for the gay community, such as Madonna and Barbra Streisand, but Gaga stresses there’s no bad blood between them, no matter what the tabs write.

“There’s no drama, there’s no jealousy, there’s no competition. They’re just happy to see other women winning. I just feel so connected to Madonna in a lot of ways, and I feel connected to Barbra, and I feel connected to Cher and Blondie and all of the women who came before me,” she says.

Gaga doesn’t care when the press takes rumors about her personal life and run with them, as long as she can use the exposure to bring attention to a cause that would probably otherwise slip unnoticed.

She knows that being a star also comes with downsides, one of them being the attention and rumors about her personal life.

“I care only about what I can change. What can I push forward? How can I be a part of the fight for modern social issues?” she says.
