It hasn't been much of a competition lately, but for those still counting, Lady Gaga has now surpassed 10 million followers on Twitter, the first to achieve this monumental feat. Justin Bieber isn't far behind, but as is always the case, nobody will remember who came in second place.

It's taken some time reach this point, but not as much as it would seem. While things have slowed down lately, it was just a couple of years ago that Ashton Kutcher was locked in a heated battle with CNN to reach one million followers on this newfangled site called Twitter.

It's not much of a surprise that Lady Gaga was the first to reach the milestone, the star has used the online medium extensively to fuel her celebrity.

Her videos top YouTube view charts and she has one of the most popular Facebook pages as well. She's also an avid Twitter user, she constantly keeps in touch with her followers, whom she affectionately calls her "monsters."

Still, she's no match for Justin Bieber, who, despite having only 9,640,463 followers on Twitter, has written 9,081 updates, compared to Gaga's only 735 tweets.

Lady Gaga was quite excited about the honor of not only being the number one Twitter user, but also the first to reach the 10 million follower milestone.

"10 Million Monsters! I'm speechless, we did it! Its an illness how I love you. Leaving London smiling," she tweeted when she first found out the news.

Over at Facebook, things look quite different, Lady Gaga is going strong, but, with 34 million Facebook fans, she only comes in at number four. With over 42.6 million fans, Zynga's Texas Hold'em Poker enjoys a solid lead on the social networking site. However, the number one celebrity is Eminem, with almost 36 million fans.
