At the VMAs 2010, Lady Gaga topped even herself, by wearing a dress and accessories made entirely of raw meat. Backstage, Ellen DeGeneres was shooting footage for her show and didn’t hesitate to grill the singer about her odd choice.

As we also reported earlier today, Gaga has come under serious fire for her fashion choice, with PETA being the bitterest critic and even predicting her sales will see a steep fall if she continues to glorify violence to animals.

Clearly, these are things that Ellen knew would be said about Gaga the moment she set foot on the red (white) carpet at the VMAs, therefore she wasted no time in asking her about the reason behind her dress, as EW can confirm.

“I get most of your outfits. You have the meat bikini on and now the meat dress… because I’m vegan… What is the purpose of the meat?” Ellen bluntly asks the singer.

Gaga goes on to say that the dress of meat is meant to tell people they should always stay true to themselves and, most importantly, to stand up for what they believe in, otherwise they’re worthless.

“Well, it is certainly no disrespect to anyone that is vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the Earth,” Gaga says.

“However, it has many interpretations, but for me this evening if we don’t stand up for what we believe in and if we don’t fight for our rights, pretty soon we’re going to have as much rights as the meat on our bones,” she adds.

Then, lifting a copy of Vogue Hommes Japan, on whose cover she’s featured in a swimsuit made of meat, she says, “And, I am not a piece of meat.”

In response, Ellen offered the fashionista a two-piece swimsuit and skirt made of kale, which Gaga considered a very “cool” idea, as the video below will confirm.

After that, Gaga talked about how it was like to take home so many awards at the Video Music Awards, saying she was very nervous because she wasn’t there to perform but to received praise for her work.

“I was supremely nervous is a way that I have never been nervous because I wasn’t performing. I’m not used to just… like going to accept awards and get my picture taken. I don’t do that,” she explained.

“And so much of what I stand for is really hard work and being yourself and busting your [expletive]. It was really difficult for me. I can’t let my fans down tonight because then I’m just another [expletive] in a dress at an award show,” Gaga added.
