Lady Gaga is almost unrecognizable in official video for “Born This Way”

If ever before you thought Lady Gaga was bizarre, just wait until you see her brand new video for the first single off her upcoming album, “Born This Way.” It was released today and you can check it out embedded at the end of the article.

As Gaga explained in previous interviews, the single (and the album, to a certain extent) is about the birth of a new race, one that does not know prejudice and that, therefore, embraces that which is different as something extraordinary and doesn’t single it out.

It’s no wonder then that, having written the song with this message in mind, Gaga also penned a script for a video to showcase the same idea.

The script was written by Gaga herself, while Nick Knight directed it. The choreography in the video is by Laurie Ann Gibson.

The 7.20-minute video shows Gaga as Mother Monster giving birth to the new race within the human race. The actual song doesn’t start until well into the second minute, since it’s preceded by a long introduction by Gaga.

She says, for instance, that when Mother Monster gave birth to the perfect race, evil was also born into the world. It’s the basic idea of the dual universe, where the good can’t exist without evil, and the other way around.

The video uses very smart imagery for the scenes in which Gaga is actually laying eggs (pardon the lack of a better term, but this seems to be the case here) but, for the rest of the time, it allows her ample room to shine, dance and deliver her message of equality.

This is Gaga as her fans have never seen her before: with horns and protruding cheekbones and shoulders, there is really nothing beautiful – in the traditional sense of the word – about her.

Then again, this is probably what she wanted from the very start, because she’s just as fascinating to watch even if she doesn’t fit the bill for a typical pop star.

Also featured in the video is Canadian model Rick Genest, also known as “Zombie Boy” because of his tattoos, who also made an appearance in Gaga’s short film for Thierry Mugler, as we also noted at the time.

“It’s the story about the birth of a new race. A race that bears no prejudice and a race that’s primary sort of ambition in life is to inspire unity and togetherness,” Gaga said in a recent interview about the video, as cited by MTV News.

“The song is very meaningful to me, so I wanted to make something that would really show what was going on in my head when I wrote Born This Way,” she added.
