It’s a given now to expect something shocking, outrageous and very controversial from Lady Gaga, as regards both her music and her fashion. With the video for “The Edge of Glory,” Gaga shocks again – but for precisely the reasons you wouldn’t expect.

Check out the brand new video for her latest single off the “Born This Way” album below, embedded at the end of the article.

While she gave fans her most outrageous fashion yet and controversial imagery in the video for “Judas,” for “The Edge of Glory,” Gaga turns back to her roots.

The clip has none of the outfits one would expect from the singer, no fancy choreography with the help of countless dancers and no apparent storyline, other than that of showing Gaga dancing on the fire escape.

Instead, it’s a nod to all classic ‘80s pop videos from Madonna to Michael Jackson’s, with Gaga showing off some dance moves typical for that period.

Since the song features a sax solo from Clarence Clemons from the E Street Band, the video too includes a special cameo from him, made all the more special since he suffered what is being described as a “severe stroke” earlier this week.

In the clip, he’s shown sitting on the stairs next to Gaga, who is leaning on him and smiling at him sweetly, right before getting up and kissing the ground – a touching tribute to her New York roots.

Idolator notes that scaling it down was the best choice for Gaga right now, since she was running the risk of going overboard completely with her Gaga-ness.

“It’s old hat for a Lady Gaga video to shock us, but we’re baffled by the pop star’s simple approach in her video for Born This Way single ‘The Edge Of Glory’,” the e-zine writes.

“Remember those hints about Enrique Iglesias-looking doctor characters and the wink to the video being ‘fishy’? Well, none of that takes place in this video. Instead, we get Gaga wearing leather, fishnets and Spike Lee’s wardrobe from the mid-90s, dancing around a street corner like she’s in ‘Do The Right Thing’,” Idolator notes.

“It’s the most un-Gaga-esque video she’s given us yet,” the e-zine adds. Other media outlets agree on that it’s also one of her best to date.
