Lady Gaga has committed the biggest faux pas of the moment: she’s uttered the word “retarded” in a magazine interview. In a statement to gossip blogger Perez Hilton

, the singer apologizes, saying the slip came in the heat of the moment.

After some backlash that she, out of all people, should say the R-word in an interview, Gaga has issued a statement to say she meant nothing bad by it.

Her life and work continue to focus on eliminating all types of discrimination: the word was a simple slip of the tongue.

She probably got too inflamed in the discussion with the reporter for the NME editorial, who was asking her whether she was inspired by Madonna’s “Express Yourself” when writing “Born This Way,” and whether she was aware she was accused of stealing Madonna’s song.

Obviously, she didn’t mean anything by it.

“I consider it part of my life’s work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance,” Gaga says in the statement, in response to the accusation that she too promoted discrimination by the use of that word.

“My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully. To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional. An honest mistake, requires honesty to make,” the singer adds.

She ends the statement with the same message of love she promotes on her upcoming album, “Born This Way”: being different means all the more reason to be proud of yourself.

“Whether life’s disabilities, left you outcast bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today,” Gaga says.

As we also noted the other day, Gaga let the word slip as she tried to convince the reporter that she didn’t look up to Madonna for inspiration – if anything, inspiration came from God for the material on the album.

“Listen to me. Why the [hell]...? I’m a songwriter. I’ve written loads of music. Why would I try to put out a song and think I’m getting one over on everybody? That’s retarded,” Gaga said.
