LaCie is a well known manufacturer of hard disks enclosures. And it seems that this year they, together with other enclosure manufacturers, caught the “large storage array” fever. As a reminder, LaCie were the first to introduce a 1TB Raid Array using 2 hard drives each capable of storing
almost 500GB of data. And now, right before the holidays, they have returned with yet another bang. Probably the biggest.
Yep, it’s actually a 4 drives Raid-able array that sums up an enormous 2TB of storage if you use all the space that is available on the 500GB SATA drives. Biggest FW800 storage box comes with full Raid capabilities including 0, 1, 0+1, 5 and 5+ modes. Evidently, you can set it up to use the 4 drives as one and get all the 2TBs just for you. The box also comes with a pretty LCD status panel.
Regarding the connectivity, the Biggest FW800 can be connected to the PC by using a Firewire 800/400 interface or even USB 2.0 in case Firewire is not available. LaCie said that the box automatically responds to power and fan failures and that it will shut down if the temperature exceeds 55°C. The Raid mode is being controlled by a jumper found in the back of the case.
Regarding the availability, LaCie says that Biggest FW800 is available right now. We haven’t got the time to check this out but we believe them, especially since the price for the 2TB giant is about $2,300. There’s even a “smaller” 1TB box that costs “only” $1600. But I guess that - if you really need the space - at the moment there’s no alternative.
