It seems that, even with all the myriads of new miniature storage units, some companies still take the time to create items that truly stand out, some even through truly unexpected means.

When making any sort of technological product, all it takes to make it stand out, so to speak, is to change something about it enough to make it truly unique.

In the case of flash drives, one can do various things, like giving it hardware encryption, fashioning a special sort of enclosure etc.

This once, LaCie and Christofle have teamed up and put together a device that stands out through being, among other things, small.

The other major fact about it is that it is plated in its entirety with silver, meaning actual silver not just a look-alike coating.

Basically, it is a very small, pebble-shaped product which is hand-crafted and bears the name of Galet.

To be more specific, the actual storage unit is put together by LaCie, after which Christofle gets to work on coating it in silver through its 150 year-old silvering process.

“The spirit and philosophies of Christofle and its luxury brand, combined with the technical expertise of LaCie, have come together to transform a universal technology into an object that is as beautiful and simple a treasured piece of jewellery,” said Luc Pierart, Business Unit Manager, Consumer Peripherals, LaCie.

“Each time you open it, its mystery is revealed – an elegant USB key,” he added.

Essentially, it is intended as a gift, to the point where it is hand-packed in a gift box straight out of the factory in Paris.

Finally, to complete the range of appealing assets, the Galet actually seems to bear the USB 3.0 SuperSpeed interface, meaning that reading and writing to and from the 4 GB of built-in storage will be quick and easy. Those interested in it will have to part with 100 Euro (£95).
