There's no question that with the advent of SuperSpeed USB 3.0 external storage manufacturers really have what it takes in order to reach impressive transfer speeds, LaCie just announcing they managed to break the 300MB/s barrier with their updated d2 and 2big USB 3.0 external hard drives that are now available with 3TB disks.

Thanks to this update, the dual-drive packing LaCie 2big USB 3.0 can now reach 6TB in storage capacity, this unit enabling users to operate the two HDDs placed inside it in either RAID 1 or RAID 0 modes by a simple flick of a switch, JBOD operation being also available.

Configuring the drives in a RAID 0, will get you that 306MB/s speed touted by LaCie, the company stating this is the “fastest performance of any 2-bay RAID solution to-date.”

Moving on to the d2 USB 3.0 unit, this can also be configured with a 3TB hard drive, LaCie saying the d2 can achieve speeds of up to 156 MB/s, a pretty impressive result for a mechanical hard drive.

Apart from the new 3TB HDD option, both the d2 and the 2big come with the same specifications as their smaller 2TB brothers, these aluminum built units being compatible with Windows as well as Mac systems while also being bundled with special backup software.

"There is no question heavy data users continue to demand higher capacities, and in turn faster transfer speeds," said Erwan Girard, Business Unit Manager for Professional Products.

"Today, LaCie answered this challenge by introducing the largest available capacity and fastest transfer speeds in a single solution, providing users with increased backup efficiency and reduced risk for backup interruption."

The LaCie 2big USB 3.0 6TB and LaCie d2 USB 3.0 3TB will be available at the beginning of November, pricing for these units not being disclosed yet.
