USB flash drives are known for being portable, but the device that LaCie just showcased has such a small physical size that it is either one of or the very smallest USB flash drive in existence, measuring only 20mm and weighing just 10 grams.
Until some time ago, creating a worthwhile, small flash drive was tricky because flash chips themselves were not small and capacious enough for a viable amount of storage to be implementable.
Now, however, with NAND reaching smaller processes, it is quite possible to create tiny drives that have more storage space that even older-generation hard disk drives.
The new products invented by LaCie definitely excel at being small, measuring, as already mentioned, only 20mm.
What is more important, however, is that, even in this small package, the MosKeyto, as it is called, can cram a capacity of up to 16GB.
Essentially, when plugged into an USB port, the MosKeyto can go unnoticed almost completely, and its sleek, black plastic casing has a cap and a nylon strap for attaching a key ring.
“Outfitted in sleek black plastic, the MosKeyto is also equipped with a durable nylon strap to attach to an accessible key ring and a cap to protect its USB connector – so you will never have to worry that its tiny form factor will disappear in the depths of your backpack or briefcase,” states the press release.
The product also features an extra 4GB secure online storage from Wuala and is compatible with any computer that has an USB 2.0 port and runs Windows, Mac or Linux operating systems.
"While the MosKeyto has resemblance to a bug, with its small size and big bytes, this USB key is far from pesky," said Alexis Kobassian, Accessories Product Manager, LaCie.
"It provides high capacities in a low–profile connector, allowing you to insert it into your notebook and forget it. And with its low cost/gigabyte price, you can forget about that, too," he added.
Available in 4GB, 8GB and 16GB versions, the LaCie MosKeyto is already selling for a starting price of
$17.99.
