That means that the total capacity has been effectively doubled

Thunderbolt hard drives are a different breed than normal storage devices, at least usually, but there are exceptions, and LaCie has taken clear delight in not only releasing an example, but upgrading it.

We are, of course, referring to the Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series hard drive line, and how it has just been upgraded.

And by upgraded, we mean that the storage capacity has just become double what it used to be. From 1 TB maximum, it has crossed to 2 TB.

What's more, the 2 TB drive has a better transfer speed than before, 15% better to be precise, of 127 MB/s.

Other than that, the Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series hard drive is the same abuse-resisting, bright orange, fast, dual-interface storage device of before.

For those who want a clearer picture of the speed, in layman terms, the thing can transfer 750 RAW photos or one HD movie in less than a minute.

So, if you happen to own a Mac or Ultrabook, or both, or have a friend with one or the other, the newcomer will make it easy to share large files quickly.

"With video and photo file sizes increasing exponentially, creative pros are generating more digital content than ever before," said Erwan Girard, professional business manager, LaCie.

"Today, we've addressed their number one demand by doubling the LaCie Rugged's capacity. This allows on-the-go pros to store more data on fewer drives and lets them stay in the field longer."

In addition to physical protection (which allows the HDD to survive drops of 1.2 meters / 4 feet), the LaCie Rugged USB 3.0 Thunderbolt Series 2 TB HDD features 256-bit software encryption, to protect data from unauthorized access attempts.

LaCie ships the thing with a two-year limited warranty and a Thunderbolt cable. All for the price of $299.99 / €299.99.
