LaCie's 4TB of Storage Space

- Got a load of data? Dump it in a Quadra.

By: Alexandru Pancescu, Hardware Editor

A lot of storage solutions appeared these days with capacities in excess of 1TB but devices going above that limit are not really out of the ordinary. What is out of the ordinary is a device from the accessory and peripheral maker LaCie which can store up to 4TB of information: meet the new Biggest Quadra RAID.

Designed for video and digital content creators as
well as other professionals that use huge amounts of data, the LaCie Biggest Quadra offers support for up to four internal hard disk drives and it can connect to a host computer system using high speed interfaces like FireWire 400, FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and eSATA. Using the eSATA interface the newest LaCie product can reach data transferring speeds of up to 150MB per second while the FireWire and USB interfaces are limited to 100MB/s and 60MB/s respectively. "Taking the best in interface and disk technology, the quiet and compact Biggest Quadra is the most universal and powerful RAID system available," said , LaCie Solutions Business Unit Manager Olivier Mirloup in a release and he was cited by the news site digitaltrends. "It offers incredible capacity and speed, as well as data redundancy security to creative professionals. The Biggest Quadra is ideal for professional multi-stream audio, photo libraries, desktop publishing, video storage, and backup."

In order to work with many host computer systems the LaCie Biggest Quadra storage solution offers support for many operating systems like Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista and Mac OS 10.2.8 or higher. At a hardware level the Quadra support different RAID setups like RAID 0, 1 and 0+1 as well as a hot plug capacity which makes replacing or adding hard disk drives very easy. The Biggest Quadra is available with several storage capacities like 2, 3, and 4TB and price tags starting at $1,099 and going up to $2,199. Because the storage box comes with a plug and play design and does not require any additional driver, setting it up is easy and quick. The EMC Retrospect Express software suite is also bundled with the LaCie Biggest Quadra storage box so making advanced backups and data restorations is fast and easy.
