Lubuntu Extra Life Extension Paradigm 14.04 Beta, a remastered version of Lubuntu that introduces some new features from the latest 14.04 LTS build, has been released.

LXLE, or Lubuntu Extra Life Extension Paradigm, is a distribution that is usually based only on the LTS (long term support) releases of Lubuntu, which means that these builds are pretty rare. The developers’ goal is to provide a very stable system that features support for a very long time, in this case for three years.

Lubuntu 14.04 LTS was released only a month ago and the makers of LXLE have brought their system to life, although it's just in the Beta stages and only for the 64-bit platform. As it stands right now, LXLE will not feature a 32-bit flavor, at least not for this version. The previous release, 12.04.4, is still supported, and that might work better for this architecture.

“Having an excellent base from which to build, LXLE releases can head straight into beta testing thanks to the superb work already performed by Canonical and their LXDE Desktop Team a.k.a. Lubuntu. The LXLE 14.04 release is an attempt to continue some successful ideas portrayed in the 12.04 series, addresses known issues, bugs and attempts to fulfill known shortcomings of the OS.”

“This first beta of LXLE 14.04 is intended for testers/earlier adopters and to introduce the current ideas and direction of the OS. Staying more out of the way, and providing a cleaner interface,” said the developers in the official announcement.

According to the changelog, the Power Management is now handled automatically by TLP, some of the PCmanFM (file manager) features have been enhanced, extended, and restored, the panel trash access now replies correctly, the battery and # of trash items are now reported via the integrated conky, some apps have been replaced, and the Desktop Paradigms have been updated, tweaked, and polished.

Also, the Elementary icons have been updated, a few additional tools have been added for Openbox-only sessions, support for multiple monitors and languages has been added, the Claws email client has been pre-configured for better integration, desktop support options have been implemented, and the back processes have been optimized for better management of the resources.

More details about this distribution can be found in the official announcement. You can download Lubuntu Extra Life Extension 14.04 Beta right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
