Approximately a month ago, we reported that the Beta release of the Lubuntu-based LXLE Linux distribution was released introducing UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) support in the 64-bit ISO images, and that they’ve decided to switch to SeaMonkey as the default web browser. Today, we announce that the final release of LXLE 14.04.2 is now available for download.

Therefore, the biggest change for LXLE (Lubuntu Extra Life Extension) 14.04.2 is the inclusion of a highly customized SeaMonkey Internet suite, which is now used as the default web browser on the distribution. This release also includes the last 32-bit version of the LXLE operating system via LXLE 12.04.5, which closely mirrors the changes to the latest 64-bit edition of the operating system.

“The next incremental update of LXLE has been released, ticking it up to 14.04.2 along with the last 32bit version of LXLE ever, which is based on 12.04.5. The 32bit closely mirrors the changes to the latest 64bit edition of the OS,” was stated in the official release announcement for the LXLE 14.04.2 and 12.04.5 Linux distributions.

LXLE switches to open source software instead of proprietary ones

Another interesting thing about the new LXLE 14.04.2 release is the decision to replace proprietary software with open source ones. For example, uTox is used instead of Skype as VoIP client, and Marble world atlas is used instead of Google Earth. In addition, the LXLE developers stated that they want to stay away as much as possible from all Google products and services.

In addition, RecordMyDesktop replaces Vokoscreen as the default screen recording software, Steam for Linux client has been removed, as well as the Mozilla Firefox, Claws Mail, Osmo Calendar, XChat, and Filezilla applications. The Lightning and FireFTP add-ons have been added in SeaMonkey, and the HTML5, H.264, and WebM VP8 web technologies are fully supported.

Last but not least, all the Universal Access applications have been removed from this release, as well as the Update Manager software, as users are urged to become more familiar with Synaptic Package Manager. Of course, numerous issues have been resolved and all the packages have been updated to their latest version. Download LXLE 14.04.2 and 12.04.5 right now from Softpedia.
