One of the technologies that will see a great adoption in the telecoms industry is the Long Term Evolution standard, which is something that most of you might have learned about already. According to a recent report from In-Stat, the technology is expected to be adopted by a wide range of industry players around the world, and chip makers like Broadcom, Infineon and Qualcomm have already established LTE product development plans.

At the same time, the research firm also shows that a series of market entrants, including companies like Altair Semiconductor, Beceem, BitWave, Comsys, Sequans and Wavesat, are also hoping that the move towards LTE will offer them new opportunities on the market. According to In-Stat, LTE is on its way to become the dominant 4G technology due to the fact that it is a “truly evolutionary communications platform,” which explains the great interest chip makers show in it.

According to the recently published report from In-Stat:
- By 2013, the total value of global end-use device silicon will exceed US$2 billion, but still be early in the growth cycle.
- Much of the success in silicon will be made in low-noise amplifiers, power amplification, analog-to-digital conversion, SAW filters, and battery-life.
- The “LTE-dedicated” silicon BOM for mobile handsets will be slightly over US$125 in 2011 and decline by nearly 30% by 2013.

The research, dubbed “LTE Device Chipsets: The Workhorses of LTE,” is dedicated to the global market for LTE silicon, and it covers the examination of LTE ecosystem and of end-user device architecture, an overview of the LTE end-user chipset vendor area, and forecasts for the LTE market between 2010 and 2013. “Leading 3G baseband chipset providers will not necessarily keep their leadership in LTE,” says Allen Nogee, In-Stat analyst. “The changes in platforms and technologies are disruptive enough to create major competitive shifts.”

Additional details on the “LTE Device Chipsets: The Workhorses of LTE” report from In-Stat are available on the research firm's website, where the report is also available for purchase.
