LSI Logic Corporation and Seagate Technology today announced they have extended their SAS Leadership Initiative, strengthening at the same time their industry leading SAS (Serial Attached SCSI) position.
The SAS kits feature an LSI MegaRAID SAS 8408E storage adapter and three Seagate 73GB1 Cheetah hard drives. The first-to-market MegaRAID 8408E adapter features a PCI-Express interface for increased bandwidth, eliminating bottlenecks and enabling system builders to realize the true scalability of SAS.
"End users are anxious to leverage the configuration flexibility and performance capabilities of SAS, which is why Seagate is joining with LSI to combine the benefits of LSI storage adapters with Seagate high-performance Cheetah drives," said Bill Schilling, Director of Segment Marketing at Seagate. "These new kits put the right technologies and materials in the hands of system builders to satisfy growing demand in the channel."
LSI is the leader in enabling SAS solutions with more than a half-million SAS product shipments 'accomplished' to date. Seagate, on the other hand, is the worldwide leader in the design, manufacturing and marketing of hard disc drives.
However, SAS maintains proven parallel SCSI command set support and management capabilities while enabling a seamless transition from SCSI systems, offering increased performance, scalability, reliability and flexibility.
"As the world's leading SAS technology provider, LSI continues to expand the industry's broadest SAS portfolio in a first-to-market fashion," said Joe Leader, senior director of channel marketing and business development, LSI Logic. "By engaging with hard drive leaders such as Seagate to deliver proven self-certification kits, LSI is enabling system builders to extend their reach and deliver the promise of SAS to valued channel customers."
SAS is also said to offer the ability to implement a cost-effective tiered storage solution in a single system, supporting a mixture of SAS drives for mission-critical applications and SATA drives for near-line data.
