This was demonstrated in studies conducted decades ago

More than four decades ago, experiments conducted on alcoholic patients demonstrated that therapies based on lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) were effective in treating the condition. A meta-analysis of those studies confirmed the finding, and proposes the use of the chemical for this application.

Between the 1950s and the 1970s, scientists around the world experimented with using LSD as treatment for a wide array of disorders, and found it to be especially effective against alcoholism.

Experts from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), led by scientists Teri Krebs and Pål-Ørjan Johansen, now say that the drug deserves a second chance. In addition to treating the actual condition, LSD also prevented patients from relapsing.

“There has long been a need for better treatments for addiction. We think it is time to look at the use of psychedelics in treating various conditions,” the team says, quoted by EurekAlert.
