South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics unveiled not too long ago plans to come to the market with a new device running under Google's Android operating system, namely with a tablet PC, and now we know what name the device would sport: Optimus Pad. We already knew that LG was aiming at including the device in its Optimus line of devices, and it seems that it won't change its plans, though further details on the matter lack at the moment.

However, the leading handset vendor seems set to make a nice splash with its Optimus devices, and we should expect for the upcoming tablet PC to live up to its name.

According to the company, we should expect for this slate to boast “superior performance” than competition, while also being “thinner and lighter” than similar devices.

One thing that is certain here is that LG is not aiming only at the Apple iPad when saying this, but also at other tablet PCs running under Android, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab, which is about to hit the market.

Unfortunately, there are no exact details available on the tablet's hardware specifications, and we can not say how it would stack up against the aforementioned devices in terms of screen size and the like.

Even so, if we're to believe LG's sayings, we should be looking forwards to see a nice device launched on the market, which should include “many firsts,” in the company's own words.

Of course, it still remains to be seen when the handset vendor would make it available for purchase, since previous reports in the Optimus Pad suggest we won't see it on shelves before the fourth quarter of the year.

LG is only one of the companies which announced plans to make a move into the tablet PCs area, following makers like Samsung, Dell, ViewSonic, and more.
