We recently reported that Sony Ericsson stepped up with a new 12.1-megapixel cameraphone, called Idou. According to the latest news on the web, SE is not the only mobile phone maker to come to the market with such a beast, LG also considering releasing a 12MP device during the ongoing year. As the company indicates, such a device is already in the works, and it is expected to be ready before the end of 2009.

Jeremy Newing, LG Mobile's head of marketing in the UK, stated that the phone maker had plans to walk that way, although no further details on the upcoming device were given. From what we've heard, the 12MP monster will come with good-quality lens for its snapper, and it will also include functionalities like “beauty enhancer” and “smile shot.” At the same time, there is a big chance that the phone will also sport optical zoom.

“We'll very much be releasing a 12MP camera phone... it's the same when you're buying a car, if you've got two equal cars then you'll obviously go for the one with the bigger engine,” Jeremy Newing stated. “However, it's important that people realize when taking 12MP images, they'll be using huge amounts of data, and it will be more difficult to do things like send such files,” he also added.

Undoubtedly, a mobile phone that comes with a camera with more pixels seems like an appealing device. On the other hand, we should also think about the fact that the rest of the handset's features need not be left aside while the camera sensor goes higher and higher.

Newing also said that “Will [the megapixel wars] stop at 12MP? I don't know, but getting lens quality is something else that's a requirement, and optical zoom is important too, although I can't go into detail other than to say we have a clear imaging strategy.”
