While a 3D monitor that really works seems to be something rather impossible to achieve, the idea itself doesn't keep manufacturers from trying. This time we have a new 42" 2D/3D LCD monitor coming from LG which claims to offer the most authentic 3D experience. The name is Flatron M4200D and the specs are in par with the expectations, with the model featuring "Full HD" capabilities with 1,920 x 1,080 resolution, 500cd/m2 brightness, 8ms response time, and an impressive 1600:1 contrast ratio.

The 3D filter is said to be one of "lenticular" nature, which provides auto-stereoscopic images (it is somewhat similar to the iFusion 3D) to people who watch it without the need for 3D glasses. LG says that - in order to effectively see a 3D image with a depth of over 50cm - you need be at least 10 feet far from the image.

The early products have already proved to be somewhat a success with samples being mounted in the international airports of Seoul and Kimpo and even in some of South Korea's biggest malls. LG also claims that they will mass ship the 3D Flatron TV by May 2007 worldwide at first for advertisement purpose and then also for commercial use with an expected price tag of about $14,000.

The 3D era is undeniably here, but I somehow think that it will take some time before 3D TVs become wide available. As for LG's product, the success of it largely depends on how it performs. And since you can only "review" such a product by looking at it, I sincerely doubt that anyone could produce more than a subjective opinion.
