The surprise winner of the awards

The CES Innovative Awards have been “created” to reward the most original and, of course, the most innovative devices from the hottest categories on the market. This year, many would argue that the organization's judgment might have been a bit clouded and that many important manufacturers have been unfairly left out.

Nonetheless, LG has plenty to boast with now, for it has won the Wireless handset category award with its CDMA-enabled LG VX9700 Dare, which is to appear in a special version next January for the Award tendering. This is a surprising result, even for LG, as it probably did not have too high hopes of winning this distinction.

To remind you, the LG Dare is equipped with a 3'' TFT display, featuring tactile feedback and handwriting recognition, full HTML browser, microSD card slot, Bluetooth with A2DP, and a 3.2 Megapixel autofocus camera. This was not LG's only nominee, as the CB630 Invision TV-enabled and the CU920 Vu have also been honored by being nominated in this category.

Samsung clearly has plenty to celebrate, for it had the most nominees in the handset category, including here the Access, Epix, Z400 and the CDMA-enabled Highnote. Moreover, it has won the Handset Accessory Award for the MBP200 Pico Projector.

Other winner phones were the BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220, the BlackBerry Bold 9000 and the Motorola ZN4 Krave.

With such a list of mobiles nominated or awarded distinctions, one must wonder why other important players such as Sony Ericsson or Nokia, which have released plenty of praiseworthy handset devices this year, have not won a single award. In any case, this does not derogate the award winners in any way. Besides, if the judges of the CES felt these were the rightful winners, who is to undermine their opinions?
