We've talked, time and time again, about the fact that OLED technology represents the future of displays, providing high-definition, high-contrast and crystal-clear images, while at the same time requiring a lot less power than their already "classic" LCD and PDP counterparts. Some of the most important names in the display industry have already promised that they'll be manufacturing widescreen OLED TVs in just a few years' time, and they also have the prototypes to prove that they're on the right track.

As Hiroaki Kitahara reports for Nikkei Electronics (TechOn), the latest showdown between the manufacturers of display solutions occurred at the International Meeting on Information Display (IMID) 2008, which is currently taking place in Goyang City, Korea.

And since two of the most important Korean companies, Samsung and LG, are actively involved in this competition, it's no wonder that they've tried their best in order to impress visitors, especially since they're on their home turf.

Thus, LG had on display a 19-inch OLED panel that uses an amorphous Si TFT, which is a good step towards the 40 inches we've heard about earlier this year. In its turn, Samsung also presented quite a wide range of highly innovative products, including here a 15-inch Blue Phase mode LCD panel, a 14.3-inch color electronic paper and a 4.3-inch plastic LCD, plus a 7.9mm-thick 40-inch LCD TV and a 9.8mm-thick 52-inch TV.

As mentioned earlier, the OLED display showcased by LG is solely a prototype for the time being, but it's nevertheless a step in the right direction, one that makes us hope that, in just a few years' time, we'll actually be able to enjoy the very impressive cinematographic experiences these panels will be able to provide in the comfort of our own homes.
