Advancements in graphics and display technologies have prompted consumers to look for ways to extend their entertainment possibilities across their entire home. This has led to the demand for display technologies with a bandwidth high enough for an in-home converged distribution of HD multimedia, including the uncompressed HD content that some technologies still cannot render. In order to define a standard for devices aimed at such setups, LG Electronics, Samsung Electronics, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Valens Semiconductor have announced the HDBaseT Cross-Industry Alliance, which will deal with defining the standard for, among other things, the minimum distance of uncompressed HD multimedia content transfer.
"As the demand for high-quality HD content distribution in the entire home is already huge, we are hoping that HDBaseT will play the trigger role in advancing this market, since HDBaseT enables simultaneous multi-room distribution of uncompressed HD Multimedia as well as data, control and power over a single CAT5e cable," ByungJin Kim, research fellow, LG Electronics, said. "HDBaseT is an advanced solution for securely delivering high-definition video content within the home network," Mitch Singer, CTO, Sony Pictures Entertainment, added.
The alliance, which is set to incorporate more IT industry players in the coming weeks, will carry out standardization activities over the market segments of TV sets, projectors, professional AV equipment, home theaters, content providers, IT companies and all others related to home entertainment setups. The HDBaseT will become the main standard that, besides increasing the distance of transfers, will have to simplify installations, expand distribution and reduce costs.
"We firmly believe that in today’s industry a standard must have broad consensus and support from the major players in the industry. For this purpose, we are actively working with such leading companies across the value chain to assure broad support and active participation in the newly formed HDBaseT Alliance," Dror Jerushalmi, CEO, Valens Semiconductor, shared.
The alliance has already set up its official
website and plans to attend the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2010.
