The display will have an IPS panel and no toxic materials

Companies from each stratum of the technology industry, all industries actually, need to release something new or borderline every other year or so, lest their brands become obsolete. Even well entrenched names like LG have to do it, particularly where LCD TVs are concerned, as we're about to see.

Several years back, most of the rave centered around support for 3D, even though no one expected it to become a mainstream thing (which it didn't).

Later, it was the move from Full HD image quality (1920 x 1080 pixel resolution) to 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels) that display industry news revolved around.

In a way, this continues to this day. However, with the “year of 4K” having been 2014 and a significant number of such monitors and TVs having shown up in 2013 as well, that means that 2015 is supposed to usher in something new.

We expect 5K technology to rise, but LG is one company that doesn't plan to jump into that lake from the onset. That's why its CES 2015 exhibition will include something else.

The LG 4K Ultra HD TV with quantum dot technology

Quantum dot technology uses nano crystals ranging in size from 2 to 10 nanometers in order to display an extremely wide color gamut.

Each crystal emits a different color depending on its size, meaning that a film of quantum dots added in front of the LCD backlight can provide a color reproduction rate and brightness considerably better than anything available right now.

LG intends to combine quantum dot tech with its 4K UHD in-plane switching (IPS) displays, which already have high color accuracy. The wide viewing angles aren't going to hurt either.

A 4K UHD TV with quantum dot technology to debut at CES 2015

The Consumer Electronics Show is a trade show that takes place each year in January, in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2015, it will last from January 6 to January 9.

The quantum dot 4K UHD TV should have a color reproduction rate over 30% better than on regular UHD TVs.

Also, LG has promised in its press release (embedded below) that its 4K Ultra HD TVs with quantum dot technology would not use any technology reliant on cadmium or other toxic heavy materials. We suppose it's true that tech is getting greener every year.

Unfortunately, for specs and pricing / availability information we'll have to wait until the actual show rolls around.
