The LG smartwatch 3 might be bundled with 3G

Back at CES 2014 this January, LG brought back webOS from the dead, putting it at work on one of its new smart TVs.

It seemed back then that LG had high hopes and expectations of webOS, a platform which was originally designed for tablets and smartphones by Palm.

WebOS was expected make a debut on tablets and laptops

Company officials claimed LG wanted 70% of its TV base to take advantage of webOS. Furthermore, it appeared that the company was plotting towards bringing forth new tablets and smartphones running on the same platform, as well.

Well, it’s been a few months and we haven’t heard anything related to the topic, until now. It appears webOS will by-pass tablets and smartphones for the time being and will land on another mobile category – smartwatches.

The folks at The Verge stumbled upon a developer website hosted by LG that teases a software development kit for a webOS smartwatch.

Since then, the page has been taken off, but luckily a few screenshots were snapped before it was too late. In the images you might notice the Bean Bird from LG’s webOS TV is shown carrying a watch on its back. Wink, wink!

LG reportedly developing a third smartwatch

LG is currently an active player in the smartwatch market. The company launched its first Android Wear smartwatch alongside Samsung at the Google I/O this summer. After just two months, the device maker saw it fit to introduce another smartwatch, this time with a round display, at IFA 2014.

Even if both these models are extremely new, LG is reportedly already hard at work to produce a third smartwatch iteration. According to sources familiar with the matter, the watch will follow the path set by Samsung and will bundle 3G connectivity, thus allowing users to use it as an independent device.

But that’s not the only aspect LG seems to be copying off Samsung. Like the Korean tech giant that has outfitted several of its watches with its home grown Tizen OS, LG will put its webOS on future smartwatch products. And the 3G model seems like a possible candidate.

Given the fact that Android Wear and Tizen haven’t been around for long, it seems like LG might have a real opening here to make a difference in the budding smartwatch market.

However, when contacted, LG made a point in flattening the folks’ enthusiasm by saying that the company is usually engaged in experimenting with a lot of scenarios, but that doesn’t mean they all become a reality.

It seems to us that LG is trying to cover its tracks now that the cat is out of the bag. But it’s a little bit too late, so don’t be surprised if the LG smartwatch 3 arrives with webOS on top.
