At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics made official its first smartphone to include 3D capabilities, the LG Optimus 3D, which is also the first handset in the world to provide a full 3D experience.

LG already announced plans to make the device available with both recording and playback capabilities, so that users would benefit from a complete 3D experience while on the go.

“The LG Optimus 3D introduces a number of innovative 'first' technologies, including the world’s first dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory architecture as well as the first 3D platform allowing for recording, viewing and sharing of 3D content,” the company announced.

The handset comes with a unique 'tri-dual' configuration, which includes dual-core, dual-channel and dual-memory, which should result in improved performance levels when compared to other devices powered by a 1GHz dual-core processor.

The specifications list of this smartphone also includes a 4.3-inch WVGA display for a great 3D experience without the use of glasses, with playback of 2D (up to 1080p) and 3D (up to 720p) multimedia content.

LG Optimus 3D’s dual 5MP lens camera enables users capture and record in 3D anytime, anywhere. A HDMI 1.4 connection enables users view recorded content on 3D TVs and monitors.

“Backed by a combination of superb performance and full 3D, we’re excited about the prospects of the LG Optimus 3D taking the smartphone experience to a much higher level,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company.

“We’ve incorporated every feature for the power user and we think they’ll be pleased with what they see.”

The specifications list of this device also includes a 1GHz Dual-Core Dual-Channel processor (Texas Instruments OMAP4), 8GB of internal memory and 4Gb LP DDR2, along with a 1,500 mAh battery.

2D: 1080p MPEG-4/H.264 recording and playback and 3D: 720p H.264 SEI recording and playback capabilities were also included into the mix, along with HSPA+, DLNA/HDMI 1.4, and support for H.264, H.263, DivX, MKV, WMV-9, ASF, AVI, 3GP, MP4.

What's interesting to note is that LG will launch the smartphone sometime in May with Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system on board, but will receive an upgrade to the newer Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform following the initial release.
