In 2011, South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics brought to the market their first smartphone to offer support for 3D content, but the company was already considering the release of a successor for this device.

Also packing the ability to record and playback 3D content, the next flavor of the mobile phone will land on shelves next year and will be only 7mm thin, the company has just unveiled.

The first 3D smartphone from the company was included in their popular Optimus series and was called Optimus 3D.

The successor was referred to as LG Optimus 3D 2, but there's no specific info on whether the company will keep this name for it or not.

In a recent interview with Pocket-lint, LG's Henry Noh talked about the LG Optimus 3D now on shelves, and also provided some info on the upcoming device.

According to him, all smartphones next year are expected to be slimmer than today, though they will come with similar looks.

However, the LG Optimus 3D 2 should stand up in the crowd courtesy of its 3D capabilities, although it might not be the best looking phone on the market.

“These days, all the phones look the same. They have a huge screen - 4.3-inches is normal these days - and next year they’re moving even larger. And they have a fixed number of touch buttons. They’re the same thickness. They have the same camera. And even the same OS,” Henry Noh said.

“Next year, all the phones are going to be as thin as, let’s say, 6mm. You throw in 3D, and because of the thickness and stuff, it becomes 7mm. But I bet you 90 per cent of the population won’t know the difference.”

No specific release date for the upcoming handset has been announced until now, but LG will certainly unveil more on the matter as its availability approaches, so stay tuned.
