The sequel to the popular LG Optimus One has just been introduced by the Korean handset manufacturer. However, the smartphone is only available in the United States for the moment, but will probably make its debut in other regions as well.

For the time being, customers who want a low- to mid-tier Android smartphone can grab the LG Optimus 2 for free via C Spire Wireless. Furthermore, the device is also available for purchase through regional carrier Cellcom for only $0.95. Both deals require customers to commit to a new two-year agreement.

Built on the success of the Optimus One, the highly-acclaimed entry-level Android smartphone manufactured by LG, the Optimus 2 was silently launched by the company a few days ago.

Although the phone was mentioned by C Spire Wireless about two weeks ago, when the carrier kicked-off its holiday smartphone sale, which included the Optimus 2, LG added the handset on its official site only recently.

LG Optimus 2 is powered by Google’s Android 2.3 Gingerbread platform with little to no chance of being upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich.

The smartphone comes with a decent 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen with 320 x 480 pixels resolution, as well as a 3.2-megapixel rear camera with autofocus and video recording capabilities.

It is equipped with an 800 MHz processor and packs 179 MB of internal memory, as well as microSD card slot for memory expansion.

There’s also Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support along with GPS and a 1500 mAh Li-Ion battery, which is rated by the manufacturer for up to 5 hours of talk time or up to 7 days of standby time.

LG explains the utility of the Optimus 2, but this doesn’t seem to be too convincing for the end user: “I don’t need a ton of apps, I just need a few favorites that I can get to quickly. And, that’s what I get with 5 customizable home screens and app categories, I can easily arrange my favs the way I want. For a bit of fun during the downtimes I have access to videos, music, and online reads, I can get my entertainment on the go as easily as I can at home.”
