South Korean mobile phone maker LG Electronics announced today the upcoming availability of its first handset powered by Google's Android operating system, the LG-GW620. The new device proves that the company is committed to expanding its smartphone offering, and comes only one week after the announcement regarding three new LG Windows phones that will be launched during the following weeks.

The new LG-GW620 comes to the market with a 3-inch full touchscreen display coupled with a side-sliding QWERTY keypad, so as to provide users with a wider range of functionalities. In addition, the Android platform will also provide users with access to a variety of applications meant to expand the usability of the handset even further, as well as to a series of Google services to enhance the user experience.

“The LG-GW620 will appeal to first-time smartphone customers by offering a new and different kind of user experience,” said Dr. Skott Ahn, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. “Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers. This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead.”

According to the phone maker, the new handset comes with support for social networking sites, which have attracted a larger number of mobile users lately, and is also meant to offer the smartphone experience accessible to typical users. The messaging capabilities of the device have also been enhanced, LG notes, and professionals will find the LG-GW620 a great option.

The new LG Android phone is slated for launch in the fourth quarter of the ongoing year in Europe. No further details on the handset have been unveiled, yet LG will certainly show more info on the fresh device as its release date nears. As many of you might already know, LG announced that it planned to release 13 new Windows Mobile-powered phones before the end of 2010, yet it seems that other mobile operating systems haven't been left aside either.
