The first dual-core smartphone has just become official. It is none other than the LG Optimus 2X, which was spotted into the wild before, and which is the first Android-based mobile phone to pack an NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip inside.

The smartphone should be able to offer increased levels of performance when put on sale in South Korea starting with next month. Following that initial availability, LG plans on bringing the new device to markets in Europe and Asia soon after.

The dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 system-on-a-chip inside the LG Optimus 2X is clocked in at 1GHz, while offering low power consumption and high performance levels when it comes to playing video and audio files.

“Dual-core technology is the next leap forward in mobile technology so this is no small achievement to be the first to offer a smartphone utilizing this technology,” said Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO and president of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

“With unique features such as HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) mirroring and exceptional graphics performance, the LG Optimus 2X is proof of LG’s commitment to high-end smartphones in 2011.”

The LG Optimus 2X should be capable of offering faster, smoother web browsing and running of applications, while also offering great multitasking capabilities.

“Users will experience faster web browsing and smoother gameplay compared with single-core processors running at the same speed as well as instantaneous touch response and seamless multitasking between applications,” the company announced.

The specifications list of the new device also includes a 4-inch WVGA touchscreen display, an 8-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with 1080p HD video recording capabilities, as well as a 1.3-megapixel front camera.

The phone packs 8GB of internal memory, along with a microSD memory card slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage. Moreover, it should arrive with Micro-USB port, DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) capabilities, HDMI mirroring, and a 1,500 mAh battery for increased usage time.

Brought to the market with Google's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system on board, the handset should be upgraded to Android 2.3 Gingerbread soon after launch.
